Long County Middle School Students
“Do Something” for the Homeless

Students at Long County Middle School teamed up with clothes retailer Aeropostale and civic organization DoSomething.org to sponsor the “Teens for Jeans” clothing drive.  "Teens for Jeans" encourages young people across the U.S., Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico to run a jeans drive in their school or community to provide gently-used jeans for youth experiencing homelessness.
Approximately one in three homeless people in the U.S. is under the age of 18 and one of the most requested items that young people in homeless shelters ask for is a pair of jeans. The Campaign has collected and distributed over 4 million pairs of jeans to homeless teens in need.
Despite having a small student population, Long County Middle School far exceeded its goal of 350 pairs of jeans by collecting well over 1000 pairs.  All of the jeans collected were brought in by the students themselves, and the drive was conducted by the Junior Beta Club.  These donations will be distributed to homeless shelters in the local area.
Ten students collecting the most pairs of jeans were recognized, as well as the classes with the most participation.  One student, Sydney Cowart, collected over 60 pairs alone.  In addition, the school will be entered into a national contest for the possibility of winning $5000 and Aeropostale T-shirts for all students.
“Kids want to do good things,” stated one project organizer.  “They just need the opportunity to do so.”
